Changing Lives Through Language: Why Volunteering to Teach English with ELSH Matters

Moving to a new country and rebuilding your life from scratch is an immense challenge. For many migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees arriving in Barnsley, the very first and most daunting barrier they face is language. Without it, everyday tasks become major hurdles.

At ELSH, our motto is “Bringing Communities Together through English.” We see firsthand how mastering the English language transforms lives, builds confidence, and fosters seamless integration. Our volunteer tutors are at the heart of this transformation—and you can be one of them.

Beyond Textbooks: Language for Real Life

Traditional language classes often focus heavily on complex grammar rules and textbook exams. At ELSH, we focus on functional, practical English that our learners can use the moment they step outside our doors.

Our volunteer tutors help students learn how to navigate real-world situations, such as:

  • Accessing Healthcare: Explaining symptoms to a doctor and understanding prescriptions.
  • Navigating the Town: Using public transport, reading timetables, and finding local services.
  • Community Life: Shopping with confidence, budgeting, and talking to neighbours.
  • Employability & Progress: Gaining the initial language skills needed to move on to higher education or secure a job.
More Than Just Lessons: Breaking Isolation

When you volunteer at ELSH, you are doing much more than teaching vocabulary words. You are offering a warm welcome to someone who may be feeling deeply isolated.

Our learning centre provides a safe, secure, and stimulating environment. Alongside ESOL classes, we offer a Warm Place where community members can share hot meals, play games, and make friends. Your presence as a patient listener helps reduce isolation and directly supports our learners’ mental health and wellbeing.

No Prior Teaching Experience? No Problem!

A common misconception is that you need a professional teaching qualification to volunteer with us. That is completely untrue! The most valuable traits you can bring to ELSH are patience, empathy, and enthusiasm.

We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds. Whether you want to support our structured ESOL classes or simply help guide an informal conversation group, we provide all the resources and training you need to feel confident in the classroom. You will always have the support of the ELSH family.
