The importance of language in schools, training centres, and workplaces cannot be underestimated in migrant communities, especially given that so often they find themselves economically, socially, and politically marginalised. If migrants were able to participate in these institutions, there would be a dividend for both sides to benefit. To yield these results, the key is language skills. One of the primary solutions is our charity, ELSH, as we directly teach and improve these linguistic abilities
The growing Local Diversity is 13.3% of Barnsley’s school population, now showing a steady rise in local migrant and refugee families needing language help. This means language demands such as speech, language, and communication needs remain the top recorded educational issue, emphasising that language acquisition is a significant local milestone. Furthermore, local skills face poverty constraints, as only 60.5% of Barnsley residents hold a Level 3 qualification or higher compared to the 67.8% UK average. This means migrants face risks of being trapped in low-skill work without language support. At ELSH, we step in to bridge this exact gap.
Everyday survival and Independence for accessing healthcare allows learners to explain symptoms to a GP and understand medicine instructions without translators, saving time, costs, and ensuring safety. Having robust language skills gives individuals the confidence to read bus timetables, use public transport, and travel safely alone, while also helping them manage money so they can read supermarket labels, budget effectively, and confidently handle retail transactions. Through our support at ELSH, we help learners build this crucial everyday independence.
Another practical impact is employment and financial security, as securing jobs unlocks entry-level employment opportunities so individuals can support their families and integrate economically and socially. This means avoiding exploitation and understanding basic contract terms, protecting vulnerable individuals from being underpaid or mistreated at work. Lastly, career progression opens paths to further education and qualifications that match the skills individuals brought from home. ELSH is proud to guide our learners toward these milestones every single day.
Overall, while clear generalised points can be made, it is important to consider these factors within the local language ecology. We must look closely at the opportunities arising from the knowledge of a language, as well as the constraints emanating from a lack of this knowledge. Doing this requires not only an appreciation of the present language needs of learners, but also their potential future trajectories, a mission we do every day at ELSH.
